Good morning everyone! After 28 days to fix your finances we are now back to the normal posting schedule and does anyone remember what Wednesday means? It means it’s time for the weekly poll and this weeks a gooden so make sure you all vote : )
The idea of todays question came from something that happened to me last week, I was walking down the road and there was a 5p on the floor so I thought waste not want not and picked it up. But my friend who was with me took the mick out of me and said that I was stingy, so I thought it would get all your views on the matter. To test this question out I posted it in a student forum and the feedback were amazing, but I am sure you can all beat that : ) A few of the comments can be seen below..
“Hey, 5p is 5p! I’d take it! I pick up pennies”
“Nah, I wouldn’t risk the embarressment of picking money up off the floor for a 5p. maybe a 50p, definatly £1″
“Yeah I would, it adds up after a while”
“Nah, I usually pick up anything above 20p. 10p at the least”
So do you agree with them? What amount of money would you bother picking up off the floor? Get voting….

Interestingly I feel that the answer to the question is more about ones attitude towards money and the way that one likes to perceive themselves (i.e. a balance between rationality and principle). What I mean is that rationally picking up every 1p or even every £5 or £50 note has almost zero baring upon any of our lives and as a result it is a matter of principle. In my opinion there should really only be two categories of people those who pick up 1p and those who do not pick up any single monetary value. All of those in between are likely to be the stupidest people who neither answer rationally nor out of principle and just through a random whim of what they perceive as an interesting answer. P.s. Perhaps a category of “I would not pick up any single monetary amount” should be added next time.
Thankyou for your comments as always James, I do understand your thoughts and judging from other peoples comments I think alot of the answers are down to the embarassment of picking up certain coins, especially on busy streets ; )
Thankyou for your advice, I cant imagine anyone not picking notes up but I am sure there are people out there so would of been a good idea to have that option. Out of interest what would you be prepared to pick up?
Thanks alot,
Tom
A good point. I suppose context has to be considered, but as there was no mention of a certain context I just assumed the question meant a scenario in a vacuum with lets say an average set of circumstances. I would not even hesitate to pick up a 1 pence piece and would probably launch it at anyone who frowned upon that.
