Hello everyone! As promised today we will be carrying on with saving money on travel, we all have to do it, whether it’s a 20 train journey to and from University every day or flying home every term, so it’s an expense we can’t ignore, but I am convinced with a bit of focus and a few simple changes I can help you all save money!

Day 9: Saving on your travel costs

As everyones travel patterns are different not all of the following points won’t be relevent to you, so it will be a case of seeing which ones can benefit you and then taking action! With taking action being the important word as a lot of the points revolve around being organised and movitated so its essential you carry out them  out now and it will defientely save you money! Let me know how you get on : )

6 simple changes to save money on travel

1. Buy a young person’s rail card – If you travel by train and spend more than £72 a year, then you should definitely get a rail card, which gets you 1/3 off rail fares across Britain. It took my friend a year to get one after months of nagging him, so  don’t be like him, act now to get saving! They are extremely easy to get, to get yours either go to your local train station with 2 passports sized photos or get it online.

2. Shop around – The majority of students I knew at University travelled by train, but train isn’t always necessarily the cheapest. So before getting you train tickets, why not shop around and check National Express, Mega Bus and if you are travelling a long distance maybe even flights?

3. Book early – This is a great way of saving money for just being organised, obviously it’s a bit late to be saving money for when you go back to University now, but why not book your tickets home now? If you know in advance you will be making a journey, you will be wasting money if you get them on the day. So, go to The Train Line or National Express to check advanced tickets.

4. Order a Bite Card – Just in case you haven’t been that organised then the Bite Card can help you save money! The Bite Card is a free discount card that you can easily order online and will give you 20% off food and drink at mainline train stations at places such as Burger King, Upper Crust and Millie’s Cookies. So why not order yours now? It only takes 2 minutes.

5. Travel at certain times – Travelling at different times can make a surprisingly big difference to the price of fares. Generally the cheaper tickets are either early or late, so when get your buying your tickets make you look for the cheapest option.

6. Lift Sharing – A lot of students at your University will be driving home to somewhere near you, so why not lift share? It’s usually cheaper and makes the journey go quicker! If you don’t know anyone that is travelling to somewhere near you, why don’t you post it as your status on Facebook, you’re bound to find someone. Or if that doesn’t work there are many lift sharing websites around, a popular one I have found is Lift Share.

I hope you all have found this post usefull and can help you save money on those ever predictable travel costs, it would be great to hear you get on and if you have any tips of your own for saving on travel?
